Because the heart moves, regular MRI becomes a blurry mess. We must "gate" our acquisition to the R-wave.
Prospective Gating
Trigger & Scan:The scanner waits for the R-wave, then waits for a specific "Trigger Delay" to reach diastole, then collects data.
Best for: Anatomical imaging (LGE, T1 mapping).
Best for: Anatomical imaging (LGE, T1 mapping).
Retrospective Gating
Record Always:The scanner records data continuously and records the ECG. Later, it "bins" the data into the correct cardiac phases.
Best for: Functional imaging (CINE movies).
