The gold standard for anatomical imaging. A 90° excitation pulse is followed by a 180° refocusing pulse to eliminate field inhomogeneity effects and produce a true T2-weighted echo.

The Cardiac Workhorse: bSSFP

To see the heart beat, we need an extremely fast TR. The bSSFP (TrueFISP) sequence is the gold standard for cardiac cine imaging.

The Cine Secret

Speed & Contrast:bSSFP sequences use alternating RF pulses to keep the protons in a "steady state." This allows for TRs as short as 3ms, capturing the blood as a bright, flowing signal against the darker heart muscle.

K-Space & The Breath-Hold

All the data we collect is stored in K-Space—a grid of frequencies. Once the grid is full, we use a Fourier Transform to turn those frequencies into a heart image.

Why Patients Hold Their Breath

MRI is not a snapshot; it's a recording. If the patient breathes, the heart's position changes between filling different rows of K-Space. This creates errors in the frequency map, leading to blurring or "Ghosting" artifacts that make diagnosis impossible.

How It All Fits Together

To create a cardiac image, we orchestrate a symphony of physics:

B₀: Aligns protons and creates the potential signal.

Gradients: Slice selection selects the exact cardiac plane.

RF Pulse: Excites the slice with a specific flip angle.

Relaxation: Tissue properties (T1/T2) create the contrast.

Fourier: Turns frequency data in K-space into the final image.
